Using service learning as part of work integrated learning has much to offer in a South African context. Implementing service learning in curricula requires a structured approach with a threephase process for the implementation of service learning into a curriculum design (Figure 3.3). Given that an essential aspect of working with specific communities is the initial approach, where academics may need guidance from a community member on particular cultural competencies, the first, and perhaps the most challenging, step of this process involves identifying, approaching and maintaining a relationship with the appropriate community partner/s .
