Figure 6.11: ArcGIS StoryMap software training in the SUCSESS Digital Capability Lab Beyond industry-specific skills and knowledge applicable to the field of HCT, community-based projects have also been known to foster more intangible attributes of employability, such as a willingness to serve (Jordaan, 2020). This ‘willingness-to-serve’ attribute also featured prominently in the Gap Report of the SUCSESS project as a trait that the industry considers desirable in students seeking employment (Lubbe, Letholo & Engelbrecht, 2020: 76). Two lecturers in the DHHS partnered with the head of community-engaged research and postgraduate studies at the UP Mamelodi Campus, to work on a current project with the Mamelodi Historical Society to digitise the history and heritage of Mamelodi. Students were divided into four groups of four students each, each given a community mentor and a specific theme related to the Mamelodi cultural and heritage landscape. Each group had to conduct interviews with community members, edit the interviews using a cloud-based video editing software, We-Video, and create a story map using ArcGIS StoryMap software. The HCT students were asked to plot points or sites of interest that highlight the history, heritage and culture of the Mamelodi area with additional information about the significance of the site or location for viewers, students of history or tourists to view online.
